An Attached Barn

A barn added to an existing farmhouse. This project has not yet been built.

Traditional barn functions have been conceptually adapted to the clients’ needs:

1. The ground floor for beasts becomes the car and machinery garages.

2. The second floor hay loft becomes a library for 10,000 books and a large fireplace.

3. Storage corners become twin offices

4. The “roof” spanning over and between the storage/offices becomes a reading alcove in a dovecote zone

5. The traditional barn cupola becomes a widow’s walk for viewing the night sky over the Berkshires.

6. The covered Link between the Farmhouse and Barn is a large farmhouse kitchen with a fireplace which interpenetrates the barn volume to place the thermal mass of the masonry and chimney inside the building envelope.
